Our students are celebrating the upcoming winter break by participating in a variety of winter themed PE activities. A crowd favorite is our new 'Do you want to build a Snowperson?' game. In this game, students run across the gym in relay style to turn their classmate into a snow person. Each student brings with them one piece of equipment and helps their snowperson transform. Take a look at this proud snowperson below!

All geckos grades K-5 have been working on basketball skills during the month of December. Students are being assessed on the hand dribble, the pass, and 5th grade students are assessed on their shooting form. Grades 2, 3, 4 are also being assessed on identifying crucial bones in the skeletal system. In October we began learning about the ribs, spine, skull, femur, tibia, fibula, ulna, radius, sternum, vertebra, phalanges and patella. Ask your student to sing you the bones song!
As always, your PE teachers work hard to integrate other academic areas into PE learning. For example, students have been working on passing by solving a math problem and passing the number of times as the solution. In another example, K-2 students perform one dribble for each letter of a sight word as they spell and recite commonly used words. Tomorrow, Wednesday the 7th, we are happy to be apart of our Intervention/Reading and Specials Night. Visit the gym to participate in cup stacking activities! See below for pictures of our learning in PE. During the break, ask your student about the 5 USDA food groups we have been reviewing in PE. Physical Education Standards of Learning were updated recently to include a strong focus on nutrition. Albemarle County PE teachers have taken on this change proudly. Our Geckos have been practicing identifying the 5 food groups as well as identifying foods that fit into those groups. Together we are discovering this can sometimes be challenging, like where does a tomato go? We a grateful our awesome students are using their brains to investigate healthy food choices and create a balanced meal. See you on Monday after the break!
The theme during this short week in Greer PE is calculating our heart rate and finding our pulse. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are practicing finding their pulse, and counting the beats for 6 seconds. After 6 seconds, students multiply the number of times they felt their heart beat by 10. This gives them the number of times their heart beats in a minute, which is their heart rate. Ask your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader to show you how to find their pulse and calculate their heart rate. K, 1st, and 2nd graders are practicing finding different places on their body to identify where they can find their heart beat. Students are noticing when and why their heart beats faster or slower. We are investigating through asking the questions, what fitness activities make our heart beat fast? And what activities help slow our heart rate down?
Coming up next week is the Great Stack Up! Greer students will learn how to stack special stacking cups and will participate in attempting to break a Guinness World Record for number of stackers in a day. Monday and Tuesday all three PE teachers held class together in the gym. Students participated in a large group game called Little Red Riding Hood. This game focuses on the USDA food groups and creating a healthy plate using the MyPlate model. Students worked with a partner to select equipment to represent different foods and then organized these items into fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy. Little Red Riding Hood is a crowd favorite! We love it as teachers, too. This year Virginia PE SOLs include nutrition specific standards. This game helps us teach these new standards and keep our geckos moving. Ask your student about the 5 food groups on the MyPlate model.
This month's character trait is Zest. Greer geckos show zest by being engaged in learning and by showing excitement when they try new things. This month in PE students continue to rotate through outdoor and gym locations in 2-week rotations. Students are learning about personal space, tennis, flag pulling, invasion games, fitness testing, and throwing and catching. There's a lot to feel zesty about! As the winter months approach, please remind students to bring a sweatshirt or coat for outdoor play, and as always, wear their sneakers or bring sneakers to change on their PE days.
This month Greer students learned about the character trait of perseverance. In their classrooms, Geckos show perseverance by working hard on their school work and trying new and challenging material. In PE Geckos show their grit in many different ways. 4th and 5th grade students are demonstrating their character by pushing through the PACER and the mile during Fall fitness testing. The fitness tests really challenge our students to do their best and keep their bodies healthy. K-3 students are showing their perseverance by trying new equipment challenges and learning it's okay to make a mistake...just try again and keep practicing! PE is a great place to learn and practice this character trait. Join us on Friday, September 23rd for a School Wide Morning Meeting where we will learn about our new character trait.
Welcome Greer Geckos and Gecko families! We are happy to have you at back to school night. Please feel free to write down our blog website address or take a note with you. We update our blog often with fun PE games, activities, and events. Also, grab a shoe reminder so your student is always prepared for an excellent day in PE. Thank you!
Mrs. Bond, Mrs. Tolley, and Mrs. Carpenter are having a great time working with our Greer students in PE. Already our students are remembering rules and procedures and applying them to fun PE games and activities. One of our favorite games for grades 3-5 is 'Boiling Peanut Butter Pit'. In this game, students work cooperatively to achieve team success. Students start on one side of the gym and use the equipment provided to get each member across the gym floor without letting their body touch the ground! Teammates use strategies like using a jump rope to pull team members on a scooter over to a safe mat. Students also work on honesty and fairness by beginning the challenge again if they accidentally touch the 'boiling peanut butter'. Look below to see some of our awesome Geckos using teamwork, strategy, and their muscles to succeed in a crowd favorite PE game.
Hello Greer Geckos! Your teachers have been hard at work this week during our teacher work week. Everyone is preparing for the new school year by organizing classrooms, getting books ready for you to read, and setting up equipment and supplies for you to learn with.
PE in particular is so excited to share with you the awesome things that have been happening in the olympics! What has your favorite part been so far? Who is your favorite olympic athlete? This year the PE team is also happy to introduce Mrs. Tolley to the staff. Mrs. Tolley comes to us from Broadus Wood. You might recognize her when you see her because Mrs. Tolley has done long term substituting at Greer in years past. Mrs. Tolley is an awesome teacher and brings exciting new ideas for games and units. We can't wait to get the year started! Check back regularly for updates and information from your favorite PE teacher.s |
