During the same week, students also tried cardio drumming for the first time. Students learned routines to the YMCA, Can't Touch This, and Shake it Off. Our Geckos can groove!
This year our 2-5 students had the AMAZING opportunity to learn from the UVA Hooligans break dancing crew. Mr. Andrew, Mr. John, and Mr. Joon came in to teach student some basic break dancing moves including top rocking, power moves, back spins, and footwork. Our students loved trying something new!

THANK YOU!Thank you for helping to make this year's Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart a success! All students participated in an awesome Jump Rope and Hoops themed PE class. Some families chose to raise money to support the American Heart Association. If your student participated in fundraising, you can expect the thank you gifts to arrive in about 4-6 weeks, close to Spring Break.
This year our Geckos showed us their underhand rolling skills during a bowling unit. Students K-5 had the opportunity to use a carpet bowling lane and balls with finger holds. Be sure to check out the town bowling alley to keep up with these skills!
The first quarter is complete! During the first quarter, students practiced a variety of PE skills including soccer dribbling and kicking, throwing and catching, defending, invading, balancing, and dodging/fleeing. Crowd favorites include fun tag games introduced by Mr. Painter and a game using student feet as catapults to project Mrs. Carpenter's old beanie baby toys for a partner to catch.
The weather is finally beginning to feel like Fall! Through November, classes will continue to rotate through our separate learning spaces: the gym, the field, and the blacktop. Classes who are scheduled to be outside for PE can bring and wear coats/jackets/hats to participate comfortably. Often, students warm-up through movement and accidentally leave items like jackets in PE. Writing your child's name on the clothing tag can help you, teachers, and students identify to whom the items belong. You can find the "lost and found" at the top of the purple stairs on the school's main floor. On particularly cold days, PE classes will participate inside the gym together for learning. Additionally, we have entered BOOT weather. Students are welcome to bring a change of safe shoes for PE class to change before participation. Safe PE shoes are flat with no heel, stay on the foot while playing, and have a non-marking rubber sole. Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather by getting outside and exercising together with your student! Finally it feels like Fall weather is approaching!
PE classes have been doing a great job beginning their learning units to kick off the school year. Grades 4-5 are completing their fitness testing in push-ups, curl-ups, PACER, sit and reach, and trunk lift. Later in the year, students will analyze their scores and write personalized fitness goals. Third graders are participating in fitness testing as a means of learning about moderate and vigorous activities and to learn about the expectations in the upcoming years of PE. Grades K-2 continue to practice and use locomotor movements, personal space, and applying these concepts in to learning units like kicking, dribbling, throwing and catching. While the weather remains warm, classes will continue to rotate through the indoor and outdoor learning spaces including the gym, field, and blacktop. To ensure student safety, please have students wear sneakers every PE day. Students who are not wearing sneakers might not be able to participate in the learning activity. Welcome back, Greer families!
The Greer PE team is excited to welcome our students back from summer vacation. During the first few weeks of PE, your student will learn PE on the field, on the blacktop, and in the gym. It's important students wear shoes safe for participation in all learning areas. Sneakers or tennis shoes are the best and safest choice for moving and learning in PE. If your family needs assistance with sneakers for your student, please call the school or alert your student's PE teacher. This year we welcome Mr. Painter to our teaching team! Please check back regularly for updates about physical education. We are in the swing of Spring here at Greer. There are so many exciting things are happening around our school AND there are so many exciting things coming up! During the winter months our classes spent time together in the gym. Now that the temperature is rising, each class spends a week at our outdoor rotations before spending a week in the gym. Make sure students are wearing PE shoes so they can participate in physical activities both indoors and outside!
Students have been learning about throwing and catching, striking (batting), backyard games, and (always a favorite..) students got to use the large, inflatable omnikin ball. 4th and 5th grade students finished their fitness testing and reflected on their SMART fitness goals. Be on the look out for information coming home about FIELD DAY! Field day is on June 5th with a rain date on June 6th. Greer Geckos finished up a gymnastics and tumbling unit at the end of February. 4th and 5th grade geckos demonstrating their knowledge of gymnastic skills by creating, planning, and performing their own gymnastics routines. Each routine involves students performing five different skills sequenced together. Take a look at our awesome students! Students, as always, ask an adult before viewing any videos on the internet. Please know that this video is a link to youtube, youtube may include advertisements. We have been having SO much fun in PE this month. We continue our work developing fitness skills. The past two weeks have been focused on dance, rhythm and movement. Students are learning A LOT! Some of the dances we've practiced are the cupid shuffle, cha-cha slide, wobble, bunny hop, pata pata (dance from Ghana), and a ribbon dance inspired by a Chinese tradition.
Wow! It has been quite some time since my last post. I apologize! The time after our holiday break is always fun, but busy. Since returning on the 3rd, students have not been in school on a Monday. The 30th, next Monday, will be our first of the month!
